School Week 21

This week because of the holiday we are reading; A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. We'll be doing a lapbook as well.

"
this picture-book format serves as a highly effective, empathetic way to introduce the life and legacy of important Americans to young children. Here the highlights of King's life are presented with an emphasis on his childhood and family. Children will immediately relate to his painful early experiences of racism and understand the genesis of his lifelong struggle for racial equality. The book portrays the hatred King endured, the horror of his assassination and the intense power of his message. A single-page list of important dates closes the book."

X5 rowed the book The Snowy Day.

Week ? Art Project

I haven't posted anything for art in the last few weeks, we did the usual Christmas and winter crafts. The thing is, we ate them before I could take a pic of it.. ha ha!

X5 did a shapes and cotton balls snowman, haven't taken any pics of it yet, will post when I finally do. A7 finished the lines art unit, she made these really cool bookmarks I have to laminate them and make sure I take pics of that as well.

School Week 19 & 20

It's been 2 weeks since I posted anything on the blog, we got busy, we got sick... very sick and then we needed a few days to recover and the house needed my attention, laundry as well!

Last Friday X5 came down with a stomach virus, by Saturday morning A7 had it and by Saturday evening both Dh and I had it. It was bad, really bad. Thank God for our Church body and family, they took very good care of us and the kids.
By Monday I had enough energy to disinfect the areas hardest hit like the bedrooms, living room and bathroom. Washed ALL the sheets and blankets, clothes etc. I was determined to get rid of all germs...

Dh had a harder time, he was hit worse than the rest of us and he took the longest in getting better. I am happy to report we are all back to normal, no pain, appetite is back, energy is back.

We missed two days of school this past week... I am going to go ahead and post what the plan was for the past two weeks, we actually got it all done, it took three long school days to do it but we got it done! The kids did great, we had lots of breaks in between and were usually done by the time Dh got home from work.

School Week 19

This week we finished our winter study guide and lapbook. It was good that it snowed, it really helped with a lot of the lapbook activities. We read this wonderful book; Snow by Cynthia Rylant.A7 started her spelling book Learning to Spell through Copywork Book A by Sandi Queen. There are three books A, B & C. Each book has 30 weeks worth of spelling list. The book incorporates the words into sentences, one for every day of the week, then on Friday I dictate the words on the list and she writes them down, one way to make sure she now knows how to spell them. This semester we'll be doing 15 weeks, then next year she'll do the remainder 15 and start Book B and so on till she's completed all three books. We've done two weeks and so far we both love it!
A7 also started a new math book Math U See Beta.

X5 continued working on his Code Primer Book B and handwriting book plus various workbox activities.

School Week 20

This week we rowed the book Owl Moon by Jane Yolen.
We rowed this book two yrs ago but never did a lapbook, this time around we did!

Soc. Stu: Maturity, self control, bravery, realistic expectation
Language arts: metaphor, simile
Science: owls, moon phases, bird calls

We only had three days to do this book due to sickness but we got it done, the fact we already knew the story helped!

2010

It is the start of a new year! I've been cleaning the house, getting school ready for this coming Monday and putting all that is Christmas away till next December... it has been a busy and exhausting weekend. The kids are still in vacation mode, going to be late and getting up late. That is going to change tonight... in bed by 9:30 and up by 9 am!!

We had a great holiday, it never really felt stressful, which is a first! My family decided to draw names this year, we each got one adult and one child to buy gifts for and the limit was $30, that made a huge difference... also, I already had most of the kids' gifts purchased... something I'm going to continue to do, to avoid the stores at all cost during the holidays. All of the bills are paid and we didn't need to use the credit card for any of the xmas gifts we bought, that is a definite stress reducer!!

Here's a few pics of our holidays... I'll be posting what's new for school this semester very soon!

A7 got a few of her favorite things... dvd, our old laptop, a Nintendo DS and a couple of games!

X5 got a few Clone War action figures and a Clone Wars Leapters2!! Couple of games and a storage bag for it!

Yes, he got a haircut... he wanted one.. I didn't, but I gave in.... regretting it big time..I miss his hair :(

Fun at Nina and Grandpa's house!!
